Overview

Current RCSEd Fellowship in Ophthalmology pathway currently includes a written component and structured oral component.

• Current pathway: Fellowship Written Component followed by Structured Oral Component.
• The written component is a 4-hour written paper with 180 SBA questions according to the RCSEd exam information used previously.
• The Structured Oral contains 8 structured oral stations of 15 minutes each according to the RCSEd exam information used previously.

Steps and Certification Pathway

• Step 1: Fellowship in Ophthalmology Written Component, unless an accepted written exemption is confirmed by RCSEd.
• Step 2: Fellowship in Ophthalmology Structured Oral Component.
• Successful candidates can progress to RCSEd fellowship processes according to College rules.
• From 2027, RCSEd announced a revised pathway with Component 1 MCQ, Component 2 SBA, and Component 3 Structured Oral + OSCE.

Eligibility

• Candidates generally require an acceptable primary medical qualification.
• Candidates need eligibility for RCSEd Membership in Ophthalmology / MRCS Ophth RCSEd pathway requirements as stated in earlier RCSEd exam information.
• At least 4 years of clinical ophthalmology experience was listed in the current/previous pathway information.
• Candidates must pass the written component before the structured oral unless a written exemption is formally accepted.

Study Strategy

• Prepare broad, safe general ophthalmology across all subspecialties.
• For SBA written component: practise diagnosis, investigation and management questions rather than isolated facts only.
• For structured oral: rehearse concise clinical algorithms aloud.
• Use the same viva framework repeatedly: problem representation -> differential -> work-up -> management -> complications -> counselling.
• Before committing, check whether you are sitting the old or revised pathway and tailor revision to that format.

Cross-Pathways and Timing

• ICO Advanced 180 has been referenced as a basis for written-component exemption in the current RCSEd pathway; formal confirmation is essential.
• Do not assume ICO Standard Examinations alone, FRCOphth Part 1, Glasgow Part 1/2, or new Ophthalmology Foundation exams provide the same exemption.
